Study Overview

This patient-reported outcomes study tracked 42 patients (56 target knees) who received a single intra-articular injection of 40×10⁶ Wharton's Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells for knee osteoarthritis. Patients were assessed at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months using validated clinical instruments.

The cohort included Kellgren-Lawrence grades II–IV, with a median age of 61 years. All patients completed the full 12-month follow-up, and no serious adverse events were reported throughout the study period.

Pain Progression (VAS)

Visual Analog Scale scores (0–10) showing sustained pain reduction over 12 months.

Key Finding: 55% pain reduction sustained at 12 months — most improvement occurred within the first 3 months.

Functional Outcomes (WOMAC)

WOMAC index tracking pain, stiffness, and physical function over the 12-month follow-up.

Time PointPainStiffnessFunctionTotal

Quality of Life (SF-12)

Physical and mental component scores tracked over 12 months (0–100, higher = better).

Physical Domain: +19.4 points (↑50%)

Mental Domain: +13.9 points (↑29%)

Conclusion

Patient-reported outcomes at 12 months demonstrate sustained and clinically meaningful improvements across all measured domains. Pain reduction of 55%, WOMAC total score improvement of 49%, and significant gains in both physical and mental quality of life confirm that WJ-MSC intra-articular injection provides durable benefits for knee osteoarthritis patients.
